Each year, the Riviera Maya becomes a vital sanctuary for sea turtles, one of the most emblematic and endangered species in the marine ecosystem. Sea turtle season in the Riviera Maya typically runs from May through October, with peak nesting activity occurring between June and September. During this time, coastal beaches become essential nesting grounds, making conservation efforts more important than ever.
Throughout the 2025 season, environmental initiatives across the region have demonstrated how responsible tourism and conservation can work together to protect marine life. Resorts such as El Dorado Royale and El Dorado Seaside serve as leading examples of how hospitality brands can actively contribute to sustainability and marine protection.
Through their dedicated conservation programs, both resorts helped protect 913 sea turtle nests along 3.3 kilometers of safeguarded beachfront. Of these nests, 800 belonged to green sea turtles and 113 to loggerhead turtles, two species that depend on undisturbed beaches to successfully reproduce.
Thanks to these efforts, a total of 79,157 hatchlings were safely released into the ocean, giving them a greater chance of survival. This remarkable work was made possible by a dedicated team of 73 trained individuals, who carried out daily beach patrols, nest monitoring, data collection, and environmental education activities.
Beyond protecting nests and hatchlings, these initiatives also raise awareness among guests, employees, and local communities, fostering a culture of respect and responsibility toward the natural environment.
Sea turtle season serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of long-term conservation, collaboration, and environmental stewardship. Through continued commitment and action, the Riviera Maya remains a place where marine life can thrive—now and for future generations.
