A comprehensive industry survey reveals that 68% of hotels globally continue to face significant staffing challenges despite implementing substantial wage increases and improved benefits. The American Hotel & Lodging Association study surveyed 5,000 properties worldwide.
The survey found that hotels have increased average wages by 12% since 2023, with some markets seeing increases exceeding 20%. Despite these efforts, housekeeping, food service, and front desk positions remain particularly difficult to fill.
'The labor shortage is the industry's most pressing challenge,' said Chip Rogers, AHLA CEO. 'We're competing for talent in a tight labor market and must continue evolving our value proposition to workers.'
Hotels are responding with innovative solutions including flexible scheduling, enhanced training programs, and increased automation for routine tasks. Some properties have permanently restructured operations, eliminating daily housekeeping and implementing self-service technologies. Industry experts expect staffing challenges to persist through 2026.
